Mark you calendar! On Monday, June 27th, I’ll be honored to have Congressman Mick Mulvaney (R-SC5) as a special guest for a campaign BBQ. The event will be at Creekside BBQ in Anderson. Hope ya’ll can come.
Here’s a small dose of the straight talke Mick has brought to Washington:
The role of taxes in our national budget debate
If you read last month’s column or made it out to one of our recent town hall meetings, then you know that I’ve been spending a lot of time talking about debts, deficits, and our national economy. Instead of talking about trillions or hundreds of billions of dollars, however, I’ve been breaking things down like this: imagine that we are a family that made $43,000 last year, but we spent $69,000, and we have a credit card balance of $284,000. Believe it or not, that’s where we are as a country.
And I remind people that the first thing Congress did this year was cut five percent from our own budgets. That made up about $35 million in savings.
But in that world where you’re making $43,000, you’re spending $69,000, and you’re trying to find $26,000 of savings in your budget, that $35 million represents … 70 cents.
That shows how far we have to go. Read More
