Friends, Last night the Senate took up another school choice amendment. Amendment 137D, which passed, provides school choice for parents with exceptional needs children. While not universal school choice, it is a step in the right direction.
We would like to thank Senator Kevin Bryant, who sponsored this amendment, for his work on this issue during the budget process. Also, thank you to our members who contacted lawmakers about this issue. Thanks to you, every Republican voted against tabling this amendment.
While this year’s budget does contain a measure of school choice, we are still concerned about the amount of pork spending. The budget should fund core functions of government not wildlife expositions or nonprofits. Hopefully Governor Haley will remove this excessive spending, and we will see vetoes sustained along the same margins as last night’s school choice vote.
Again, thank you for reaching out to your senator. Without your help, we wouldn’t have been able to take this first step towards universal school choice.
Sincerely,
Phillip Cease
