the storm is here!

Please be seated as you open your property tax assessment notice this week. Government growth has hit new highs as we ponder the federal $700 billion spree, to the state’s pork fest, to our local government’s unquenchable thirst for spending. We warned you about this a few dozen times in the past with posts like this one here, here, and here, and unfortunately, we face another storm. Oh, by the way, since essential things like roads and bridges have been ignored, they also are asking your permission to raise your sales taxes!

On local level, our roads and bridges in Anderson County are clearly in need of repair and upgrading. However, simply raising taxes to meet this need has proven not to be the right answer. The County is in need of a fulltime internal auditor, answering to the Council, to find better ways to manage and allocate funds.

An essential need for insuring that our tax money is handled wisely is for residents to become informed, involved, and aware of how their representatives plan to manage their affairs.

Today, October 2, 2008, at 7:00 PM, at Anderson Main Public Library, Mr. Don Bowen, Representative of SC House District 8, and Challenger Dr. Tom Dobbins will debate the issues. Everyone is invited to attend and submit questions to the moderator, Mr. Butch Hughes, prior to the debate.

Although the above candidates are not as well-known as Senator Bryant and Dr. Marshall Meadors, their views are just as sharply contrasting.

I got my assessment. It went up 15%. Actually, it was capped. I guess next time it will go up more.

This is pathetic. During these tough economic times we don’t need another stinkin tax increase.

    Psycho Conservative,

My property assessment has also increased by 15%. And although I am willing to pay my fair share, I am concerned that much of our money is being spent on unneeded buildings, parks, and green spaces. It appears that the One Cent Sales Tax Project Referendum is dead on arrival.

You were lucky if your property assessment went up only 15%. My property assessment went up almost 73%. This is truly pathetic that a house assessement would go up that much, when the economy is so bad and the home value has been greatly reduced.

    Brenda B. Crawford,

If you look at your notice from Anderson County Assessor’s Office, you will see two numbers: Current Appraised Market & Limited/Capped Taxable Value. Apparently your Current Appraised Market has gone up by 73%. However, your Limited/Capped Taxable Value has to remain capped at 15%. You are a very lucky lady.
