more national media on H. 3355 ultrasound bill

On Thursday night, CNN brought a truck in my driveway. I was on Paula Zahn Now at 8PM. The topic was H. 3355, a companion bill to my S. 84 which prompted Representative Greg Delleney to introduce a version in the House and here we are. Rep. Delleney’s bill, received 2nd reading on Wednesday (3/21) with a vote of 91-23, received 3rd reading Thursday 3/22 and has been referred to the Senate Medical Affairs. Chairman Harvey Peeler has agreed to allow me to serve on the subcommittee for detail work on amendments and such.
Transcript:
ZAHN: Should a woman who is going to have an abortion be forced to look at an ultrasound picture of the fetus before she goes through with it? We’re bringing that question “Out in the Open” tonight because just hours ago, South Carolina’s House passed a bill to make that law, and the state Senate probably will approve it quickly.
Abortion opponents may hope this persuades women not to go through with abortions, but supporters of abortion rights say it’s just plain intimidation.
With me now, state senator Kevin Bryant, a Republican who’s sponsoring the bill.
Thanks so much for being with us tonight, Senator.
To Read the Transcript:
KEVIN BRYANT (R), SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SENATOR: Thank you, Paula.

With nearly 20% of all South Carolinians being uninsured (Anderson County at 16%)and South Carolina being listed as one of the “unhealthiest” states (ranked 46th), seems to me you efforts could be channeled toward legislation that serves a broader
range of those truly in need rather than serving those who only benefit from your person agenda. I was embarassed for you!

To anon. Are you assuming that the national media is going to cover every issue that Sen. Bryant is working on?
Wouldn’t you agree that most of his actions are not going to make national news? Check his whole record. By the way, a lot of his work is listed on this blog; but I doubt if Sen. Bryant lists all of his constituent cases he works on. So this blog is probably only a sampling.

“I do believe there are some involved in this debate that simply are disappointed when someone chooses to carry the child.” I was disappointed to hear the Senator said this. Senator Bryant I really hope you don’t believe this.
I think this statement is absolutely incorrect. The fact of the matter is that people who are pro-choice are not anti-life. I have never, ever heard of a pro-choice couple who says. “We’ll were trying to get pregnant, we don’t want kids, but we are such big abortion rights advocates that we want to have one.” This is absolutely ludicrous. Whether one is pro-life or pro-choice I am sure you would be VERY hard pressed to find anyone who thinks the abortion of a child, no matter what the stage of development is not a huge personal tragedy for all involved.

To silence dogood…
Why are people against this bill if they really want people to choose life? Why does it matter to them/you? if you watched the abc news story on this bill, you would have seen a liar that works for an abortion clinic, telling America on tv that there is no tragedy for anyone that has an abortion and there is no link to deppression, breast cancer, etc. You are right when you say that it would be very hard to find someone who THINKS that the abortion is not a tragedy, but there are plenty of liberals and people who MAKE MONEY doing abortions that will lie about it.

People make choice all the time that are tragic, some because they feel compelled, some because they are just poor choices, often times peole are faced with more than one choice ALL of which have tragic outcomes, however many people do not feel it is the government’s place to compell those choices, if this debate were as simple as that there are of course much more coercive measures the government could use. My point was I felt the Senator’s comment made it seem as if there were people out there who given a choice (all other things equal) favor abortion to child birth. I was agruing that I don’t believe that is the case i.e. a friend says “I am pregnant” and the hypothetical pro-choic advocate says “That’s great, when is the abortion? You aren’t really going to have the baby are you? Is there anyway I can talk you out of it?” This kind of depiction of those who are pro-choice is, I believe, it incorrect.

No one has claimed that carrying a child under difficult circumstances is easy, but the difficult road is worth traveling when it is what is best. ProLife people need to be more helpful to those who choose to carry the baby. Thank you for all who do. I am so thankful for Senator Bryant and his wife for what they are doing.

First off, I agree with this bill about 95%. I would like to have an amendment that would make an exception for raped women. I believe that making them view the ultrasound will be detrimental to them instead of helpful. I am pro-life, but rape victims already have it hard enough in the legal system without exposing them to this. With that said, i am totally for making other women wanting to get an abortion view an ultrasound.
One thing that has come to light through the many discussions that i have heard on abortion, and been re-enforced by the discussions on this bill, is the fact that people try to make pro-life supporters look bad because we want to make women do something they don’t want to do. Who’s looking after this unborn baby? The one that doesn’t have a voice. This is the one that needs our help, not the mother who, in many cases, got herself into the situation to start with. So, Pro-choice supporters don’t use the word pro-choice to describe yourself, use pro-indifference to human life.

An abortion is harmful regardless of how the pregnancy occurred. A baby brings love to the mother and is worth saving.

This bill is disgusting. How can you legislate morality? How can you tell a woman, espacially one who has been a victim of abuse, rape, incest, or who mat die, that they have to carry a child??? An ultrasound will do nothing except cause more grief and pain to a woman who feels she has to do this? An abortion is not a walk in the park, and for you to force a woman to see an ultrasound of a fetus at 8 weeks is unreasonablely cruel!
